VAT on your purchases

Last updated 7 August 2026

If you live in the EU or the UK, VAT is added to what you buy on Hidden. It appears as a separate line on your receipt and goes to your tax authority, not to us.

What VAT is

Value Added Tax is a consumption tax charged on goods and services in the European Union and the United Kingdom. It is added at the point of purchase and paid to the relevant tax authority.

It is not specific to Hidden. Anything you buy online from within those countries carries it.

Whether it applies to you

It depends on where you live rather than where the creator is. If you are in the EU or the UK, VAT is applied. If you are elsewhere, it is not, though other taxes may be. In the US, sales tax applies instead.

How much, and on what

The rate is set by your country and varies between them. You will see the exact amount as its own line on your receipt, separate from the price of what you bought.

It applies to every payment, including subscriptions, paid posts, unlocked messages, and tips. A tip is a payment like any other as far as VAT is concerned.

Where the money goes

Directly to the tax authority in your country. Hidden keeps none of it and the creator receives none of it, so a VAT line does not mean anyone on our side earned more from your purchase.

Could this change

Possibly. Tax rules change, and we review the requirements in every country we operate in. If something changes that affects what you pay, we will say so.

Common questions

+Why did prices go up?

The prices did not. VAT was added on top of them, which is why your total is higher than the figure shown on the creator's profile.

+Can I avoid it?

No. It is set by where you live and we are required to collect it. Giving a different location would be inaccurate and is against our terms.

+Is VAT charged on tips?

Yes. Every payment is treated the same way.

+Can I claim it back?

VAT charged to a consumer is not reclaimable. If you are buying through a VAT-registered business, speak to your accountant about what applies.

+Where do I see what I paid?

On the receipt for each purchase, as a separate line.

+I moved. Which rate applies?

The rate for where you live now. Keep the address on your account current, since that is what determines it.
