3D Secure adds an extra verification step to online card payments, helping to confirm that you’re the legitimate cardholder. Here’s how the checkout process works.
What 3D Secure does
3D Secure (Three-Domain Secure) is a security protocol that adds an authentication step to your payment, reducing the risk of unauthorized card use and protecting both you and merchants from fraud.
How the verification works
- Prompt for authentication. After you enter your card details, you may see a prompt like “Verified by Visa” or “Mastercard SecureCode,” and be redirected to a secure page.
- Enter a verification code. You’ll usually receive a temporary code by SMS or email and enter it to confirm the purchase.
- Confirmation. Once the correct code is entered, the transaction goes through. If the code is wrong or not entered in time, the charge may be declined.
If your card can’t be authenticated
Sometimes a card can’t be verified through 3D Secure, and the transaction won’t go through. Common reasons include:
- Your card issuer doesn’t support 3D Secure.
- The verification code was entered incorrectly.
- The verification method (SMS or email) isn’t accessible.
