Tax/VAT number shows as invalid
Last updated 7 August 2026
Tax and VAT numbers are checked against official registries, so a number that will not save is usually a formatting problem rather than a wrong number.
Check these
The country prefix. EU VAT numbers begin with a two-letter country code. Some fields expect it and some do not, so try it both ways.
Spaces, dots, and dashes. Enter the number as one unbroken string with no punctuation, even if your paperwork shows it spaced out.
The right number. A VAT number and a tax identification number are often different. Check which one the field is asking for.
Whether it is active. A number that has been deregistered, or one issued very recently, will not validate. Newly issued numbers can take a few days to appear in the registry.
Copy the number straight from your registration document rather than typing it, since a single transposed digit fails silently.
If it still will not take
Contact support and attach a copy of your tax registration document, so we can see the number as it was issued and compare it against what the field is rejecting.
