Tell us as soon as you spot it. A 1099 is filed with the IRS as well as sent to you, so a correction has to go through us rather than being something you can adjust on your return.
Check these first
Your name and address. These come from what you submitted on your W-9. If you moved or changed your name and did not update it, that is the cause.
Your taxpayer identification number. A single wrong digit will cause the IRS to reject the match.
The amount. Compare it against your Statements page for the same year. The figure is your gross earnings, before anything you paid out and before your own expenses, so it is often higher than what reached your bank.
The amount looking too high is the most common report and is usually not an error. Gross earnings include the platform share already deducted and anything spent on fees, which your accountant will treat as expenses rather than as income you never had.
Reporting it
Contact support with:
The tax year on the form
What is wrong, and what it should say
Anything supporting it, such as the figures from your Statements page
Do not send us your full Social Security number by email. If we need it we will ask through a secure route.
Common questions
+Can I file before it is corrected?
Ask your accountant. It depends on what is wrong and how close the deadline is, and it is not a call we can make for you.
+How long does a correction take?
We will tell you where things stand once we have looked at it. Reporting it early rather than close to a filing deadline gives everyone more room.
+I did not receive a 1099 at all.
One is issued where required by law, which depends on how much you earned. Not receiving one does not mean the income is not declarable, so check with your accountant either way.
+Does the form say what the income was for?
It reports income from the paying entity. It does not describe your content.
