3D Secure is your bank checking that it is really you paying. You will see a code request or an approval prompt from your banking app. It comes from your bank, not from us.
What happens at checkout
1. You are sent to your bank After entering your card details you may be taken to a page branded Verified by Visa, Mastercard Identity Check, or your bank's own name.
2. You confirm it is you Usually a code by text message, or an approval in your banking app. Some banks ask a security question instead.
3. The payment goes through You are returned to Hidden and the purchase completes.
Stay on the page while you do this. Closing the window, switching apps for too long, or letting the code expire will fail the payment.
If it fails
Nothing is charged when verification fails. You can try again straight away.
The code did not arrive. Check the phone number your bank has for you is current. This is the most common cause and only your bank can fix it.
The code was wrong or expired. Start the payment again and use the newest code. Old ones stop working as soon as a new one is sent.
You could not reach the verification method. If the code goes to a phone you no longer use, or an email you cannot open, your bank needs to update it before any online payment will work.
Your card does not support it. A few cards cannot be verified this way at all, and those cannot be used here. Your bank can tell you, and a different card is the fix.
Why it exists
It stops someone who has your card number from spending on it, because they would also need your phone or your banking app. It is required by law for online payments in much of the world rather than being something we chose to add.
Common questions
+Can I turn it off?
No. It is set by your bank and applies to online payments generally.
+Does the message say what I am buying?
No. It shows the billing name and the amount, the same as your statement does. It never names the creator or the content.
+Why am I asked sometimes and not others?
Your bank decides. Larger amounts, a new card, or an unfamiliar pattern make a check more likely.
+Will renewals ask me every month?
Usually not. Verification tends to happen when you first set a subscription up rather than on every renewal.
