What to do if you suspect a data leak

Modified on Tue, 9 Jun at 10:48 AM

If you think your personal information may have been leaked online, acting quickly can limit the damage. Here’s what to do, and how to protect yourself going forward.

What to do right away

  1. Change your password. Update it on Hidden and anywhere else you used the same one. Choose a strong, unique password with a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols.
  2. Turn on two-factor authentication (2FA). This adds an extra layer of security, so others can’t get in with just your password.
  3. Watch your accounts. Keep an eye on your bank, card, and online accounts for any unauthorized or suspicious activity, and report anything unusual to your bank straight away.
  4. Let us know. If you think the leak involved Hidden, contact our Support team so we can investigate and help secure your account.

How to protect yourself going forward

  • Use 2FA everywhere you can. It’s one of the most effective ways to keep your accounts safe.
  • Share less personal information online. Be cautious of sites asking for details they don’t need.
  • Learn to spot phishing. Scam emails and messages often pretend to be from trusted sources to steal your information. When in doubt, don’t click.
  • Check if you’ve been affected. Free tools like Have I Been Pwned let you see whether your email has appeared in a known data breach.
